DETAILS!
Details?
Was having a long chat with one of my strong mentors in football and this was the summary of the discussion after 5 hours of brainstorming. Soccer is like a chess game, every move I make starting from the first pawn, the main aim is to topple the king. There is no moving the pawn for the fun of it.
Transfer that to football, the main aim we set a team, train and plan so much is to topple the opponent and in this context win the game and tournament.
Soccer we have three main situations - DEFENDING, ATTACKING and TRANSITION.
(Was just corrected by Coach Bojan that football has 4 situations:
1. When you have the ball
2. Transition to defense when you loose the ball
3. When opponent have ball
4. Transition to attack when you win the ball)
Sounds and Look easy, but if we see the detail of it, than its just mind blowing.
Why Pep has seen so much success? He starts with DETAILS.
We have see successful coaches with many trophies and we feel its because they have good players, monetary support and world class facilities. I believe its because they spend hours looking at details and always looking for solutions.
Defending is when ball is with opponent, Attacking is when ball is with us and Transition is when either one of the two is loss.
For a start lets see Defending - when defending few things I can think of is
1. Position where ball is loss - in opponent half, mid area or in our half
2. Formation and position of players when defending - are we organise or is our shape not organise. Is our players in position after losing ball. Do they know their responsibilities.
3. Opponents position and formation - How does the opponent plan and move during attack. Are they organise?
4. Which player has the ball from the opponent - is he the playmaker or can he drop a long ball, should we drop fast or delay him.
5. Tactical - Are we going to press right after we lose possession, are our players good in pressing as a unit?
6. Individual - Are our players capable in defending one on one or we need to double up. Are we strong enough to challenge the opponent.
7. Fitness - Are we quick and agile to turn and defend, is our players strong to challenge the opponent. Are the players able to maintain the balance and stay on the feet. Can the players respond to the situation and not react.
Anything else?
